Top 7 Results

Opening Group routine was a Tyce, Broadway routine, the dancers (including the All Stars) were dressed in period 20s? 40s? clothes. They all looked great.
~~~
Ashley was automatically in the Bottom 3. Joining her was Billy (although he had a good night) & 1st Timer in the Bottom 3, Jose'. Ashley being hurt, didn't do a solo. Billy did a ho-hum solo but Jose got fierce again, and showed a little fight.
But, the truth was, Ashley has to take 3 weeks off to heal & so she's the one to go. Nigel said that she'd been selected to go on the Tour, so she better take care now.
Bye Ashley - I really thought you were excellent.
Top 7, no really, 6 Perform
Top 7, no really 6 Perform
Everyone is still in mourning with the departure of Alex Wong (who btw, went through a successful surgery to re-attach his Achilles tendon).
Right away, we found out that the pretty & sweet dancing princess Ashley, was also hurt in rehearsal with some injured ribs & will have to sit the show out. Waaaa? Another one down? This is a bummer, especially since Ashley is such a good little dancer.
Moving on, tonight's show format will consist of the contestants dancing 1x w/ an All Star & 1x paired up w/ a fellow contestant.
1- Lauren + Mark
choreo-Tiana, style-"Cultural" is what the card said, which turned out to be Tahitian dance. Yaay, a style that reminds me of my home, Hawaii Nei, as it is common for hula dancers back home to also delve into dancing Tahitian. Tahitians are the Hawaiians cousins. In fact, my hot cousin Hoku, does (male) Tahitian dancing (as part of his repertoire of skills) in a show in Waikiki.
Of course, little Miss-18 or 19 Years-Old Lauren had never seen this style in her short life. I was also happy that Mark was her partner, who would have to call up his island roots to learn this dance too. Polynesian dancing was a way for our ancestors to tell the stories of our history & myths & beliefs, as we didn't have written language back then.
Female Tahitian dance costumes usually include some tassles or in this case, feathers, to accentuate the hip action - which is largely what Tahitan dance involves. Lauren wore a feathered headdress and a bustle of feather across her bum. Mark also wore a feathered headdress, was shirtless, wore a loincloth and leaves around his lower legs. He looked Polynesian & HOT!
Our SYTYCD storyline was that Lauren represented "Day" who flirts with "Night" (Mark) - let the hips begin!
I had my doubts if this haole girl could pick up a very foreign (to her) dance style in the 2 or 3 days they get to learn a routine....but she NAILED IT! I got to admit, she did her afafas [hips move in a box shape], her fa'araupus (or amis) [hips stir in fast circles], and some tamaus [hips bump side to side] all while keeping her upper body isolated and still, or doing arm/hand motions. Her feathered booty was shaking and circulating like those machines that mix paint. Mark did the male style of dance - lots of knees going out & together, while bent. The Tahitian males look fierce with their steps. He looked great! And the headdress covered up his ears - making him look even more handsome.
The haole judges really didn't know how to critique a dance style they knew nothing about (well, Adam's good friend teaches that style, so he knew a little). Of course, pervy Uncle Nigel liked what he saw. Success to Lauren - she's a little monster.
My Grade: A-
2- Adechike' + Anya
choreo-Liz Lira, style-super salsa
I wasn't sure how contemp dancer Chike' was going to do w/ Anya - would there be chemistry? Well, he had no time to worry about that because this Liz gal threw a super hard, competition-level salsa at them. Lots of spins, twirls, lifts, arm connections-all done fast. Adechike' had to do a trick where he held Anya cradled in his arms in front of him and then tossed her up so that she did a double twirl in the air, and then catch her in his arms again. Waaahh? Good thing he's strong - cuz throwing that girl and catching her must be hard! But I have to give props to Anya. who showed some athleticism too, because she had to do a horizontal back bend while Chike' held the back of her head, hold it there while he did a move, then slide the back of her head down his legs-and finish the move by lifting her body from back bend to straight up - that took major ab muscles on her part-sheesh.
I thought Adechike' did pretty good considering the level of difficulty. I did see some hip action (although some of the judges said he didn't do enough). But they had some stalls while doing the hand connections and going in & out of some tricks, Anya admitted it too - but the dance was at a pro-level.
Nigel said Adechike' didn't look like a contemp dancer in the routine- a compliment. Adam said it was Hard Ass choreo & Chike' showed no sign of weakness while doing it.
My Grade: B to B-
3-Jose' + Courtney
choreo-Miss "Tall & Scary" Joey Dowling, style-Broadway
from 'Chicago' song-'Mr. Cellophane'
The story was about a stagehand who's enthralled with a showgirl, who figuratively & so, literally, doesn't see him. He's a 'nobody.' Jose was told to think of a dead kitten, etc. (by Miss Scary) to help him portray sadness for his character. Yikes! His character is sad that the showgirl doesn't know he's there. Courtney wore a showgirl costume & paraded herself around the stage, complete with feather fans. Sad, mopey Jose, kind of danced in front & around her, while Courtney was supposed to look through him & not notice. He had very few actual dance steps & he when he did-he didn't do those very well. I thought that his steps didn't project from the stage, like a Broadway dancer is supposed to.
This week, the judges couldn't heap praise on their favorite pet - he was too weak & they let him know it. Mia couldn't even look at his puppy dog face while she criticized, um critiqued, him. Jose looked like he was going to cry. So Adam tried to give constructive comments & told him he needed to work on his lines & stretch. They judges said he needed to take dance lessons.
My Grade: C-
4- Robert + Allison
choreo-Travis Wall, style-contemp, song by Coldplay, 'Fix You'
The story behind this dance was that it was about Travis's own life; it was about his mother's (dance teacher Denise Wall) serious health struggles & his own life around that. Allison played the sick mother & Robert was to be Travis.
I know that Robert is a Mama's Boy so that should be an easy role to play - it came out that Robert's mother must've also had a health problem too, because he said he could relate to the number. The dance started off with Allison moving like she was ill, Robert at her side helping her walk, then the tempo picked up and they did typical contemp dance steps. The dance ended with Allison walking slowly towards stage right and Robert sort of tucked his feet under hers, helping to move her feet & walk with his. That was the best part. Robert did well, although I would've liked to see more masculine strength in his arms & leg lines.
The judges all loved it. Nigel was touting the dance as Emmy-nomination-worthy. Mia cried, as she recently lost her own mother. Dancer Robert was teary-eyed at one point afterwards too. Even our gal Cat was choked up & made some eloquent comments.
[To me, although I usually really like Travis's routine, this dance wasn't as awe-inspiring & tear-jerking as Tyce's 'Breast Cancer' dance, which was perfection].
My Grade: B or so...
5-Billy + Anya (2 dances from her this week)
choreo-Louis Van Amstel (of DWTS fame), style-jive, song by Meatloaf, that "Dashboard Light" song
Billy's objective this week was to connect w/ his partner but, as we heard from his awkward laugh in the vid package, was having a somewhat hard time of it (hmm, methinks it was because Anya is a female?). And Anya is a full-sized, mature female - all the harder for Billy, probably. Billy would also need to a strong enough male to lead his partner. What I figured he'd do well at- was the jive. I was right, that boy can flick like crazy. His flicks were sharp & snappy & his jive kicks were high & he could move his feet fast. The surprise was, he did show some male spirit & actually looked liked he enjoyed dancing w/ Anya. He made eye contact with her, he smiled, and got into the cheeky, retro-rock persona the music called for.
Nigel commented that this was the hardest he'd see Billy dance yet, he noticed that Billy had worked on his chemistry, as was asked of him - but Nigel also said Billy's kicks were almost too high. whatever Uncle Nigel. Mia said it was a stellar performance & loved that his training was evident in his jive. Cat made a comment about Anya being a 'sex bomb' but her accent made it sound like 'sex bum' <-which confused poor Billy..huh? sex bum? Awkward.... Adam said Billy connected & was in charge.
My Grade: B+
6- Kent + Neil
choreo-Tyce, style-Broadway
song from 'Damn Yankees' which is apparently about baseball.
Cuties Neil & Kent were dressed like baseball players, I mean, could any two lads look more All American than those two? Nope. OK, I don't love the sport of baseball, but Tyce choreographed an all-male style number complete with tons of acrobatics (which they both can do). They did flips & roundovers (?) simultaneously - awesomely. They danced w/ baseball bats & looked adorable. Due to the super-sized stage & this year's not-s0-good camera work, I thought Kent was a little dwarfed next to Neil. Neil is bigger & caught my eye a little more. Kent did end the number on a real high note w/ multiple hopping pirouettes right into a front over 'suicide jump' -he was incredible.
Nigel said he thought Kent outdanced Neil a bit (not-they were both evenly matched). Mia said that she 'loves boys' (hmmm, right...) & was happy to see strong male dancers (me too!). Adam said Kent nailed it & had a future on Broadway, a very nice compliment.
My Grade: A- (even though it was a baseball dance, the boys get cute points)
now to the contestant-contestant part of the show
7- Lauren & Billy
choreo-Mandy Moore, style-funky jazz
song- "Boogie Shoes" by KC & the Sunshine Band
For this dance, Mandy Moore imagined 2 pairs of magical shoes that meet up & dance with a life of their own. The kids wore sparkly Converse shoes: blue for Billy and pink for Lauren. I have never seen this style of jazz dance on SYTYCD - it was part super-duper-cutesy and part groovy-funky. Their moves were old school and funky. Good for Mandy to choreograph a subtler, different kind of routine than we usually have on SYTYCD. What I will say about that girl Lauren, is that she always, always commits! Even with this easy-going, but cute, semi-laid back style of dance, she grooved it to the max & really showed her musicality & a mature confidence. Billy was smiling (again) and was loose like a funky chicken.
Nigel again praised Billy for connecting w/ a partner & said jazz dance suited him. Mia said the number was the cutest thing ever. Adam said BB got lost in the dance, which is what he had asked Billy to do + mentioned that the boys (of SYTYCD) have something to be afraid of in Lauren (I told you she's a monster).
My Grade: A Funky A- (incl. points for originality for Mandy)
8- Jose' & .... well, he drew a "Gold Star" Card (which is like a Wildcard) - and his partner was not another competitor, but Dominic
choreo-NappyTabs, style- the 1st All-B-Boy dance number
Former contestant & B-Boy 'legend' Legacy was assisting the guys in the studio, which was cool. The dance was to be a representation of East vs. West, 2 B-Boy warriors duking it out. This was Jose's chance to make up for sucking earlier in the show & he knew it. He & Dom did good: they did a section with side-by-side windmills; a part where Dom was on the ground, on his back, w/ his legs up & had Jose balancing on his feet to a push off/throw; and a part where they did a leg lock/hook thingy which looked like they were grappling (like warriors). The routine ended w/ Jose' climbing up a faux stone & pulling a sword out of it -AKA the King. I still thought Jose' didn't look quite as strong as Dom, even though I could see the boy brought his fierceness.
Nigel said Jose' had redeemed himself. Mia said awesome. Adam gave Jose' props for coming back after the 1st dance slaughter (paraphrasing) & schooling them.
My Grade: B+
What was funny, though what happened was mostly off-camera, was when Dominic was given Jose's sword during the critique & told to take it & go off stage - I think I saw that Dom held the sword out from the front of his crotch, in an erect-like manner. Cat quickly put the kibosh on Adam or anyone making comments on what I think I saw happen, and put the lid on it by scolding him & the judges, slightly out of mic-range, so no one would bring Dom's naughty act to light. Why hasn't this woman been nominated for Best Host yet? She's nice and she's pro.
9- Kent & Adechike'
choreo-Dee (a dude) Casbury, style-contemp
When Kent & Adechike saw that they drew each other, Kent was mugging into the camera, saying, "White Choclate" and Adechike was "Dark Chocolate." too funny, these two. Adechike supposedly let the cat out of the bag when he told the camera that a secret about Kent was that the kiss he laid on Lauren at the end of the Travis Wall after-prom contemp number he did w/ Lauren, was not choreo'ed. Kent did it on his own, supposedly. Hmmmm, I wonder...?
The choreographer, Dee Casbury, not someone I know that well, opened the vid package with the fact that he'd never choreo'ed an all-male dance before. The guys pitched in & said that they thought they'd be given masculine, strong movements (trying to subliminally reinforce to the audience that they are both straight).
This dance was about two friends; one of them (Kent) was in a bad relationship (represented by a chair) and the friend (Chike') was trying to talk him into leaving the chair (yet there was also another chair as a prop too). So both guys had to do standard contemporary-style emoting, but they also had to look strong, like guys - a fine line to walk. They danced around the chairs, did leaps, and develope's as only two guys can do (huh?). Adechike did one beautifully high stag leap over Kent's legs. Kent kept the emotions real, showing some anguish over his chair-um,gf, then Chike' would grab him & fling him away from it. Dee utilized the fact that Kent is not a big guy and had he & Chike' do a couple boy-boy lifts/tosses.
I like the dance, both of them did great, and thought Kent looked beautiful (in a masculine way, of course). He has the cutest, unusual nose. Yes, I'm a nose person. Yes, I'm also a Kent person, hey I discovered him during the auditions, before the teenie girls.
Nigel complimented Kent on under-playing the emtions (again this week). He talked about Adechike's high leap. Mia again was happy about having an all-male dance, as these dancers showed vulnerability - yet strength.
They told Adechike that his dance idol, Desmond Richardson, would probably be proud of him tonight (they are trying hard to be such a-holes like they've been to Chike'). Adam told both guys that they were super athletes & artists-brilliant. They taught him something.
My Grade: A/A-
10-Robert & his perfect dance mate-Ashley - NOT! She got injured. Kathryn stepped in last minute for this Dorianna the Murderess (my nickname for her) Sanchez disco number. The reason I call her that, is she choreos disco dances that are so fast, with non-stop tricks & lifts, she's a slayer.
I think the last minute partner switch threw Robert off. I could see sight hesitations in the hand connections and tricks. But both Robert & Kathryn are extremely talented, so they discoed their way through the high-speed routine.
Robert was wearing tight, white disco pants, a purple open necked shirt & white vest. Not the most masculine costume. At one point when he was pas dueux buerre'ing across the stage, in my mind, I flashed on the Village People, so I think he must've looked a little non-hetero in his movements. But I love Robert anyway.
He had no problem with the cheesy 70s smile.
Uncle Nigel had flashbacks to back-in-the-day when he discoed. Mia said she never wanted to see Robert do that again. She said that if Robert to wear a costume like that -he better be more masculine & heavier in his steps. Nigel pipped in & said he thought Robert looked masculine in that (of course he did, he's British-not know for their ruggedness). Adam thought Robert sold the fun factor of disco - he was 'buying it."
My Grade: B (points off for the 'flame-up' I sensed in his movements)
Farewell Alex Wong
Due to his Achilles tendon being lacerated, Alex Wong had to withdraw from SYTYCD-and therefore was the one "voted off" this week.
sniff...we will miss you...
SYTYCD - Australia - Season 3
Sidenote: I've found a way to go watch the SYTYCD Austarlia season 3, via web sources. It happend earlier this year.
I have to say the Aussies aren't as attractive as our kids, but they work hard & have a lot of heart. Congrats to winner Robbie - the tiny contemp dancer with skills for days.
Top 8 - ummmm Top 7 Perform
last week Melinda was finally voted off
*****
This week, the contestants were to perform 1 number w/ the All Stars (one they'd never danced with before) & 1 number w/ another contestant.
For my comments, where there are two contestants, I will use the "&" symbol versus the "+" symbol.
News Flash: Alex Freaking Wong is injured during dress rehearsals! He has a possible ruptured Achilles tendon. He is out for this week (at the least) & will automatically be in the Bottom 3. Also injured is All Star Allison.
1- Lauren + Pasha
choreo-Jean Marc, style-cha cha, song-"Telephone" by Lady Gaga
First of all, Pasha makes everyone look better. Lauren was wearing a white fringed semi-dress & looked hot. She twisted & shook her fringe - but this was no remake of Melinda, cuz this girl can dance. Even though she's never done cha cha - she worked it out. It was good, she didn't twist her hips as much as a full-on ballroom dancer - but she looked good.
Nigel said she looked like a 'full-bodied woman.' <--dirty old man. Mia said she was so hot & danced like a woman. Adam said Lauren made him want to swear (in a good way) & he was proud of her. I like that Adam, for a gay guy, he can appreciate the fairer sex.
2- José+ Lauren
choreo-Mandy Moore style-contemp
Jose's goal was to look intimate w/Lauren (not a problem for the straight guys, as she is bootylicious) and he wanted to look like a contemporary dancer. Mandy said the dance was about soulmates. Like a usual contemporary dance, there was a lot of lifts and leg lifts. This benefited José, as he was required to lift Lauren and not do much dancing himself. He was camouflaged sort of. Of course the judges heaped praise on their little pet. Their bias towards José is very unfair & obvious.
Nigel again commented on Jose's naiveté; Mia on his 'lack of ego.' Adam said José showed his passion and is uninhibited.
3- Kent + Comfort
choreo-Dave Scott, style-smooth hip hop
There were a lot of eyebrows raised when we saw Kent had to do hip hop this week.
Dave Scott said Kent needed to get rid of his (now-famous) 'deer in the headlights' look. Kent said he was going to copy Comfort's face exactly.
The dance was a smooth, groove hip hop, very Justin Timberlake. In fact, Kent wore JT's style of hat, which helped to cover his white boy face & upped his cool factor. There was a step in the dance where Kent spanked Comfort's butt -cute. Kent did well dancing in the JT style. I liked it.
Nigel said Kent didn't overact, which was good. Mia said she 'wasn't mad' at Kent, he was cool but not as cool as Dave Scott (duh). Adam said he saw growth in Kent's performance, and that the small style of his moves drew them in.
4- Adéchiké + Courtney
choreo-Mandy Moore style-jazz
The storyline of this dance was that Courtney was at a bar at closing time & looking for a man. Adéchiké was the guy working at the bar. They used an actual bar & stools for a prop. In fact, most of the dance involved Shortney dancing & wiggling on the bar stools & on the bar. There was maybe an 8-count where they danced jazz side by side. Mostly it was acting – not dancing – but that’s not Adéchiké’s fault.
Nigel mostly thought he was good, more or less, after his breakthrough last week. Mean old Mia said he was mediocre & that his character was the same as last week’s. Adam said Chiké needed to get lost in the music, not the choreo.
Cat actually had to interrupt the judge’s comments as they were being so negative! They love to pick on Adéchiké.
5- Billy + not Allison, but KKKKKatee, the Queen of Season 4! She was brought in special to replace Allison this week (lucky for Billy). choreo-Spencer Liff (a guy that looks too young to be a choreographer) , style-Broadway jazz, song-"MacCavity' from "Cats."
I am one of the few that are into dance that haven't seen "Cats," and if that song is an example - I'm not missing much. The two wore black & silver 'Fosse-esque' outfits & did your typical high-leaping jazz stuff. This was right up Billy's alley (cat-heehee)& was a duck in water dancing this style with She Who Can Do No Wrong at his side. They were excellent, of course- two technicians snapping it out. Nigel said it was Billy's best dancing aside from his solos. Mia wasn't bitchy & said he was 'fabulicious.' Adam loved it too.
6- Ashley + Dominic
choreo-NappyTabs style-hip hop song-"How Low' by Luda
The theme of this number was that the two of them were ninja assassins, which would be a stretch for pretty lil Ashley, as no one sees her as intimidating. But I say, don't count the girl out, she is a fighter, she wants this. Ashley did really good-her pelvic snaps were snappin', she hit it. Not too Contemporaryish. She had a step where she did a lifted leg split down into a floor split - wow! All 3 judges liked it.
7- Robert + Kathryn
choreo-Sean Cheeseman , style-jazz song-"Sinking Feeling"
In this dance, the two characters were toys, dolls in a box that come alive at night. The doll boxes were "Bob" & "Kathie" <- as in, nicknames of the two dancers, cute. At the beginning of the dance, and for a while, they danced in their boxes. Robert looked goofy & did well at this. When they got out of the boxes, they did some lifts & danced a wee bit. Robert is spot on as always-he's one of my favs. Afterwards, Nigel did some P.R. for Robert, saying he didn't deserve to be in the Bottom 3, and that he'd looked at message boards to see what people were writing about Robert. The word was that people were saying that they think he's arrogant. What? He's clearly a hard-working goofball - not arrogant. Mia concurred w/Nigel and vouched that Robt. is hard-working & said that this dance was tailored to Robert. Adam said he's so great, stellar.
now to the Contestant-Contestant section
8-Adechike & Not Alex - but assistant Marla
choreo-Nakul, style-Bollywood
This dance didn't have a storyline like the Bollywood numbers usually do, instead it was a devotional dance to a god. Both Alex (earlier in the week, pre-injury) & Adechike had to learn the finger shapes & gestures, which are unfamiliar to most dancers.
Since Alex got injured (during this very dance) Nakul's assitant stepped in. The dance went from fast to Adechike taking off his vest to be bare-chested and then VERY fast dance steps. The finale was Adechike doing 7 split jumps IN A ROW! What?! So hard.
Nigel said 'Chike needed to do deeper plie's, had to be sharper in his movements. I'd like to see that old man do Bollywood. Mia said Adechike looked more like he was doing African dancing. Is that because she's a predjudiced bitch? Then she had the NERVE to say she missed Alex in that number so much. Adama said he had power but lacked finish in huis lines. Adechike looked like he was holding back tears. Cat, again, had to stand up for Adechike and remonded the judges back to when their pet Jose did Bollywood & wasn't that good, how they said he put his own spin on the steps - something they were faulting Adechike now for. Mean Mia was so out of hand that Cat had to speak up twice. Bring back Mary!!!!!
9- Kent & Lauren
choreo-Travis Wall, style-contemp
This number was suited for the Teen Dream Team - it was about the prom couple & young love. Kent reminded us that he recently was Prom King - awwww. laurem was afraind the teeage girls won't vote for her becuase they'd be jealous she was getting to act this out w/ our favorite Farm Boy. Their dance was sweet as first love. Kent lifted Lauren, looked tenderly into her face, they rolled around together, ran into each other's arms. I replayed the dance & looked at Kent's face- it was so full of love, he got into the character. The kids did great in this. At the end of the dance was a real, full-on kiss. sigh
Nigel commented on Kent's hard work & that he felt Lauren's heart (which he doesnt usually). Evil Mia said Lauren was perfect in this number. Adam felt weird becuase he said the number was too initmate & I guess he felt like a peeping Tom watching the two of them.
10- Ashley & Robert
choreo- Jean Marc & France, style-duh, duh, duh, dum...the Quickstep (AKA the Kiss of Death dance) music-Big Bad VooDoo Daddy
I have to say Ashley & Robert are another two that are suited to each other. Both are Brunette & good-looking & do contemp & worked hard-are driven. Yep, they were a match. Unfortunately for them, they had to do the Quickstep, which is hard, & something the SYTYCD audience doesn't appreciate. The vooDoo music had a strong beat which either helped or hurt the dance, depending. The theme was that Robt had a voo doo stick cane & the girl wanted his power. That did not come across in the dance, sorry Jean Marc. The pair did their best efforts in the Quickstep......
Nigel said Robert's elbow needed to be up, but said Ashley was lovely. Mia got thrown by the music. Verdict-not the full Kiss of Death...
11- Billy & Jose'
choreo-Sean Cheeseman, style-Afrojazz
In this dance, the storyline was that Billy was a jaguar & Jose was the hunter. Billy did a lot of assisted lifts & throws with Jose throwing him. They two did stallker & the stalked type of movements & leapt around. Jose did some b-boy flips. Billy did some weird-looking, lizardish poses, not very jaguar-like. Meh.
Nigel finally did some critiqueing of Jose & said he wasn't powerful enough. Mia loved whatever animal Billy was (but that he wasn't a jaguar). Adam said Billy needed to let go of his lines in this style. Jose needed to hit it harder.
Top 9 Perform
last week: Cristina was voted off
****
TOP 9 Perform
This week, each contestant was to do a dance + a solo.
I'll use a * to indicate a solo performance. In general, their solos don't get me that excited, oh well.
Sidenote: Cat looked great in her strapless mylar/aluminum foil dress. She's so cute.
1- Adechike' + Lauren
choreo-Dave Scott, Hip Hop
Right away, we could see Adechike was stoked to be partnered w/ Miss Lauren, he called the two of them 'Muscles & Cushion' <-in reference to her booty. This brought the chemistry between them. The dance was about 2 nerds, who bust out of their shells & consequently, busted out of their shirts (Lauren revealed a purple glitter bra top underneath). Adechike's character went from nerdy to flirty - I renamed him, Ade-cheeky! He smiled, had swagger and did a very good job. Nigel said he had confidence. Mia called him "Mr. Personality" Adam just hooted "Hooooo." Adechike' claimed that this was the real him.
2- Ashley + Ade'
choreo- new-Dee Caspary, contemp
When is this girl going to draw another style but her own (contemp)? The Travis Wall dance was not really jazz (as discussed last week).
In the vid package, Ashley said that she & Ade had to 'be as one." In the dance, she got intertwined w/ Ade' a lot. Aside from the fact that we're sick of seeing her do contemp, I liked the dance. Of course, there were a lot of lifts & leaps & Ade, my gentle giant, was there to catch her. Ashley was lovely, dramatic, loose, w/ her gorgeous hair flowing & flying . Ade' actually got to do more than just assist the girl, he did some steps & was great. Nigel said she was smooth & had fluidity.
I think Adam said she was the best girl dancer.
* Billy's solo - usual stuff, danced well. blah, blah, blah.
3-Robert + Courtney
choreo-Sonja, Jazz
Robert was reunited w/ Shortney & Sonja. He was happy because he says that Sonja 'pushes him.' The dance itself was done to techno music & went along w/ the techno vibe - herky, jerky, quirky - not my favorite dance of hers. He/they did a lot of great extensions, arches, throws, arches. The most memorable scene was when Robert choked Courtney.
Nigel said that Sonja's style suited Robt. Mia said that Robert should take ballet to ground him.
* Jose's solo - to James Brown's 'Super Bad' - not that impressive.
4- Melinda + Pasha
choreo- Fabian Sanchez (pro on DWTS one season), style-"salsa"
Melinda revealed she's Colombian & I guess was hoping to tap into her roots for help/inspiration & to show a 'new side' to us.
Right when the dance started, her dress got caught on her heel & she quickly unstuck it & carried on like a pro. Pasha was wearing tight white pants - bonus - that ass! At one point Pasha gave Melinda a frontal pelvis to pelvis bump - lucky girl.
There were elements of other Latin styles in this dance like samba. Melinda tried to to the samba hips & have salsa flavor, you can see the girl is a fighter- she shook, she shimmied. She leapt on top of Pasha & flexed back -tricky. But other than that, I thought she didn't have the sabor. She just doesn't have pretty leg lines (even in the sexy outfit). Nigel said had no fluidity. Mia commented on her pigeon toes but said Melinda has 'gumption'. And then - quite the Snap!-Mia said that she thinks they made a mistake last week when they sent Cristina home - ouch!
Adam agreed.
I think it's adios time for her next show.
*Kent's solo- did acrobatic stuff, I liked it.
*Alex's solo - done to a 'Planet of the Apes' soundtrack song, it had a variety of movements styles, and he showed his musicality by staying w/ the beat. He did a no-hand cartwheel. It was very good-my fav solo thus far.
5- Lauren + Neal
choreo-Joey Dowling, Broadway
When Lauren saw she'd drawn Neal's name she was happy because they are both 'pretty'. Hmmph, Blonds on Broadway, eh? The song was "Let Me Entertain You." Her character was a 40s starlet & Neal was a paperboy who was daydreaming about her. Lauren knew she'd have to show lots of personality in this number, especially since Neal was dreaming. She did her best vamp, dancing around & seducing Neal. In fact, she was working it so hard that, near the end, the strap on her dress busted, but the little trooper didn't even blink & kept on. Neal was cute after the dance, he tried & help Lauren's strap reattach.
Nigel said he enjoyed that, of course, dirty old man. Mia said she had to be more feminine (since she's so athletic), but still was fabulous. Adam gave her advice - imagine you're dancing through water - to help her get a softer edge, but said she looked like a young Sid Cherice.
*Ashley's solo- well done to the music, also did a no-hand cartwheel.
6- Billy + Kathryn
choreo-Stacey Tookey, contemp song-"Jar of Hearts"
Billy's character was supposed to break Kathryn's heart, so the 2 of them had to get a connection in order to portray the emotions. We know that Kathryn is an All Star and can do it. Billy, on the other hand, although he danced technically perfect, was lacking in the emotions department. I didn't feel his connection to Kat.
Nigel said he didn't believe the partnership. Mia said Billy had to bring the connection. Waa Waa, poor Billy.
Sidenote: Turns out Billy's inspiration was ole Legacy from Season 5(?) Yep, Legacy the break dancer. Billy had seen him perform when he was 12 & subsequently took a little boys hip hop class. Legacy was in the audience & looked proud.
*Robert's solo - some quirk factor, great lines, the guy is just a good dancer.
7-Jose' + Anya
choreo-Dimitry Chaplin (hottie), style-samba
Of course, Jose had never done a samba before & he had to partner w/ mucho machacha Anya. Buena suerte, Jose. heehee. The dance started off w/ Anya dancing in a table, which was the prop throughout the dance. Jose had to catch her in a lift with her massive lags wrapped around him. Ugh, he looks too small boned-it must've been hard. But I have to say, Jose looked guapo (handsome) in those ballroom boy threads. He wore a black lace shirt that was unbuttoned (of course, especially since it was a Dimitry number), and tight black pants. His Latin, Miami heritage helped him pull it off, as he looked down his nose, commanding Anya. He did a couple samba-ish steps & tried his best. Nigel said Jose' is not the best dancer-but he has charisma. Mia also loves to watch him, his humbleness & openness. Adam said he made the dance work for him - not the opposite.
*Melinda's solo-tap is a tube top dress. Awkward as usual.
8-Kent + Allison
choreo-Mandy Moore, style-jazz song-'Heartburn' by Alicia Keys
Mandy said the dance was about strong lines. She tried to school Farm Boy in walking like a man. Kent had to work on being a man-not acting like a man. Poor thing-he's only 18. And he was paired w/ Allison, who, in her costume, looked like a woman who's been around the block before, very worldly. In her costume, which included white satin, tux-styled shorts, her thighs were twice as big as Kent's. Kent was dancing w/ his mouth making the "Oh face." He struggled (I thought so) to do his lifts w/ big Allison. He did a nice no-hand chartwheel. But the two were so mismatched in their size that I couldn't visually accept the partnership. Nigel said Kent needed to have honesty in his performance & Kent looked a little fake & that he was playing to the audience & not his partner. Mia said no more 'deer in the headlights' looks from Kent. Adam called it the 'hungry jazz face' - Adam is so funny. Poor lil Kent.
*Adechike' solo- he looked studly & athletic, as he dance w/out a shirt. Very strong.
*Lauren's solo-good musicality.
9- Adam + Twitch
choreo-NappyTabs, style-hip hop, song-"get Outta Your Mind"
When Adam drew hip hop & Twich -he boo hoo'ed to the camera. Nappy Tabs also were a little worried about Alex doing their style. This was SYTYCD's first time having a boy-boy dance (except for the finals). The theme of the dance was that Twitch was a shrink & Alex the patient (on the couch, even). Twitch looked very paternal in his role, it was cute. He was counseling his patient Alex to get outta his mind (like the song). Dude is such a smooth dancer. But here's the kicker - ALEX TORE IT UP! He did pelvic thrusts, he did fast hip hop footwork side-by-side w/ Twitch. NappyTabs threw in some ballet poses in for Alex-which he showed how strong & limber he is. His last step was a ballet twirl down to one knee. This prompted Twitch to go and do the same move-just to show he could do it too (shades of the Russian dance number in the season 4 finale w/ Jason in which they tried to out-do each other-cute). The two guys were spot on & entertaining. The audience went WILD! Cat, later, said, that was the biggest roar from the audience she'd ever heard. End of the show- Elvis has left the building. Best dance this season & beyond!
Top 10
Note from last week: wittle Alexie was voted off the 1st show--
Top 10- For this show, it seemed that 1/2 of the contestants were dancing in (close to or in) their own style & the other 1/2 were thrown 180 from their style.
The Haves vs. the Have Nots
Also to note, the costume designer was smoking crack half the time.
1- Cristina + Pasha
choreo-Jean-Marc & France, style-Paso Doble or, as it was called, Pasha Doble
She was in a hideous yellow & purple fringey 2-piece outfit. Being Mexican, Salsa girl had no problemo getting into the Latin vibe and taking the 'Spanish line' in the paso. She looked appropriately fierce for this bullfighter-based dance style. Her flamenco steps were crisp. Jean-Marc gave the two quite a few stunts, w/ great lifts & tricks. Pasha was muy caliente, of course. At the end, Cristina got to have Pasha lie of top of her & then she rolled over to end up w/ her straddling him on top. Lucky bi-otch. All 3 judges loved her.
2- Adechike' + Allison
choreo-Mandy Moore, contemp
Mandy claimed that the dance this week didn't have a story. She told Adechike' that contemporary dance didn't have to be painful & encouraged him to work on facial expressions (esp. after his last week's performance & critique). The dance seemed to be about a couple in love. Adechike' scored on the costume, as he was shirtless (or was it that we, the viewers, scored?). The number was danced well. Adechike' pasted on a small yet pleasant smile for most of the dance. I could see him thinking, "Oh Mr. Whitey wants mes to smiles." The judges noticed an improvement in his emoting, but Mia said he was still 'lacking heat.' When he wants to, Adechike' does have a nice smile (& is a handsome guy).
3-Alex + Lauren
choreo-Tyce Diorio style-Broadway, some version of "Summertime"
Fosse, Fosse, Fosse! Tyce wanted to bring Alex back to the old school Bob Fosse days. Alex admitted that he wasn't that familiar w/ the legend. Gasp! So he studied Fosse a little & knew he had to bring a sensuality to the dance (paraphrasing). The costume was a non-score for Alex (although Mia loved the costumes-but look how she dresses). They wore dark purple & black, which didn't 'pop' and made Alex seem diminished (and being Asian, he's not that tall). My eye was drawn more to Lauren - who was slaying that Fosse, full of drama.
The judges were disappointed in Alex's performance, although technically he's perfect, of course. I felt he didn't seem dirty enough...I could fix that, heh heh.
4- Ashley + Mark
choreo-Travis Wall style-"jazz" <-a mislabeling which Nigel had issue with, it was more of a contemp. Eyrythmics song.
Now I have loved Trais Wall's dances since he came on board as a choreographer, but I agree, it wasn't really jazz. Semantics aside, the dance was with brunette girl & my homeboy Mark. She got to do her own style. A Haves. They wore flowing white, Mark had on an open white shirt & damn, it threw me, how sexy he looked. I'm used to thinking of him in the quirky, weird light (which he must've worked that when he was a dancer on Lady Gaga's tour last year!) - so this handsome, sexy, hetero Mark both attracted me and disturbed me, as I watched him do a few convincing pelvic rolls. Oh my!
Back to the contestant...Ashley had to do a lot of partnering & tricks -lifts, body rolls off & on & around Marks body, dives, drops. She got every step, she is a very good dancer, but I didn't totally buy them as a couple (cuz if Mark is going to turn hetero-sexy, then he must be mine!) I wonder if America will vote for her...?
5- Billy + Comfort
choreo-"The Professor" Lil' C, style- Krump
Yep, Billy was one of the Have Nots - I mean, Krump? Billy? This pale, flexible, elf-faced boy from Palm Beach? Lil C tried to re-brand him as 'Billy B. Buck' to boost up his street flava' but Mia called him 'Billy B. Whack' <-which was bitchy & mean.
Billy did better than I thought he would, he hit every beat (just not animalistic enough) and his musicality was spot on. One of the judges noticed that he still danced w/ his feet turned out. Nigel said he wasn't 'warrior' enough. You mean, Billy couldn't totally cover up his contemporary training in one week & act like he was an angry brother from LA? duh. Comfort was nice (huh?) cuz she stood up for Billy & vocalized that he did good, considering where he came from. I think Billy needed more slap and more snap in his Krump, but good effort.
6- Robert + Anya
choreo-Jean-Marc, Argentine Tango (yay) 'Libertango'
First of all, Robert was stunningly gorgeous in his costume- gray trousers w/ suspenders and an unbuttoned white shirt, his dark hair slicked back-YUM! That boy could be an Abercrombie & Fitch model. He gave 'great tango face' & had nice Spanish Lines. El Hombre!! Of course the dance had a lot of flicks & kicks. But I got distracted when I'd see one of Anya's thunder thighs wrap around Robert, it looked like a small animal was climbing onto his lap. I thought he did well, and so did Nigel -but Mia said that Anya devoured Robert (so that's what she's packing in those thighs). Mia was Senorita Bitchy tonight. Anya, much like Comfort, stood up for her partner & said she wouldn't have looked so good if Robert wasn't partnering her so well (paraphrase). That shocked me, because whenever I see Anya dance, I feel she's dancing to be the center of attention, and that was an unselfish act on her part. A final comment was that Robert needed to stretch his steps, OK, I can see that one.
7- Melinda + Ade'
choreo-Stacey Tookey, contemp
Stacey went Green in her ode to Mother Nature dance. I usually like her dances, but eh, not so much this time. Does that mean I don't care about our planet? Tapper girl's character was Mother Earth who take a lot of shit from mankind, in the form of Ade' (who looks too sweet to represent carbon emissions, etc). She also was dressed in a fashion disaster, weird, bits of planet appliquéd & hanging off of on a short satin dress. Ick!! Being a former actress, Melinda tried to act her way through the dance, but I saw through it. Ade' was as always, strong & smooth & the best damn partner. I thought Melinda didn't extend enough,a by-product of her tap dance training - but Mia said she liked Melinda's lines. Nigel said she had fantastic lines too. Huh? Who was I watching then? I swear, I'd only had 1 cocktail before I watched the show.
8- Jose + Kathryn
choreo-Nakul, style-Bollywood
Pobrisito Jose, he had never heard of Bollywood before, he was definitely one of the Have Nots. He was supposed to be a genie in this number. All Star Kathryn looked amazing & did great, she's a mini-beast that can adapt to many styles.
Jose had to learn hand movements - something he'd never have to do in breakin'.
Bollywood moves fast & furious & Jose tried to keep up but he didn't get the light, quick jumping movements quite right. Adam said it was a 'failed experiment.'
But I say that Jose' has charisma & the SYTYCD audience likes that. His high-cheekbone smile works wonders.
9- Lauren + Dominic
choreo- new-Tassandra Chavez, Lyrical hip hop
Lauren's feedback last week was for her to express honest emotions (paraphrase) and to connect with her partner. New mami Tassandra's dance was about Domestic Abuse and she really was drilling it into blonde girl & Dom to take their a anger feelings to the next level (paraphrase). I liked that shortie was a good size match for poquito Dom.
I thought Lauren really showed her pain & anger in this dance. What I didn't see much of, was any domestic abuse, I know that when I see it. Girlie did a lot of reacting & fighting back to Dom - but what did he do? Adam & the other judges were pleased that she took their critiques from last week to heart. Miss Thang Mia even said she was 'awesome', lucky for Lauren.
10- Kent + Courtney
choreo-Tyce jazz <--this time a proper jazz number.
song "Amy, Amy, Amy" <-very cool for this dance
Oooo, Kent drew the short straw for his costume, he was wearing a butch gay man's outfit but has a little twink face. A brown leather harness get-up. Snap! During the vid package Farm Boy said (gee shucks) "Courtney let him 'touch her all he wants'" without caring. She was trying to coach him & asked "do you want me?" "Gulp" Kent, you're not in Ohio anymore, honey. This sexy dance involved a table, which Kent did some cool tricks off of - this one flip onto his back on the top was very butch. Since Courtney is the resident expert naughty doll, she had no trouble bringing it. I thought Kent actually looked turned on & I kind of got turned on too. (Shame on me, he's just a baby) Kent got scolded from the judges who said Courtney ate him up (c'mon, enough Mistress Mia). Courtney spoke up & said she thought Kent brought the sexy (paraphrase). That's right! He looked genuinely horny! He just doesn't have the jaded look of experience.
One of my favorite numbers of the night.
stay tuned...
Top 11
1- Billy + Lauren
choreo-Tyce Diorio, style-Broadway, "Footloose"
First of all, I'm not on board w/ this whole 'Footloose' revival, I'm kind of 'eh' about it. Billy had to move fast in this number, set against some school lockers & was able to keep up. He had to be in character, because it's Broadway, and be compelling - but he was only OK. Tyce's choreo wasn't the best. Of course, All-Star Lauren hit it - she's an animal.
2- Cristina + Mark
choreo-Sonja, contemp
This was Cristina's first time dancing contemp & good thing she went & got more training beyond salsa since she'd auditioned last season. Sonja's dance was a series of quirky poses w/ some lifts. Of course, Mark was right at home in his quirky kingdom. I love that kooky guy. Salsa girl did all right. She told judges that she had to learn to be fluid for this number (she had to do some snake-like movements). They seemed to be impressed w/ her, being out of her style.
3- Jose + Comfort
choreo-Nappy Tabs, hip hop, "Beautiful Monster"
This was Jose's 1st time having to dance choreo w/ a partner, he even had to do a running catch w/ Comfort. He had to be in character - they were fierce & monsterish. He gave it his best efforts & was good (not great).
4- Ade'chike + Kathryn
choreo-Travis Wall, style-jazz, "Addicted to Love"
Story was about an office dude who was dreaming about a hottie. Kathryn had the sizzle dial turned up to '10' in her red dress, dancing about Adechike. He didn't bring the sexy, though, which the judges all reamed him for. Poor dude - Kathryn was on fire. He was technically fine, just not sexy. Probably was scared if he danced like that with a white woman, then all the white folks would get jealous.
5- Melinda + Pasha
choreo-Tony & Melanie, style-jive
Well, it was surprising to see Melinda in a dress & looking like a girl. However, she looked awkward doing the jive, she could've flicked higher. Pasha was cute of course. The judges didn't like her legs. It was 'meh' - she'll being dancing for her life next show.
6-Alex + Allison
choreo-Sonja. style-lyrical comtemp, "Hallelujah"
Alex must've said 'Hallelujah' when he drew this number, because it's what he does on the daily (I've seen his youtube vids of past dances). Almost wasn't fair. It was a very moving piece by Sonja (in a non-quirky first for her). Alex & Allison emoted their hearts out. Alex was magnificent! Even got choked up at the end. The judges gave him a standing O & a "best dance ever"! 5 staRS!
7- Alexie + Twitch
choreo-NappyTabs, cute hip hop
This was a cute hip hop routine about a girl who's bf sneaks in her window to see her. Alexie was too too cutesy & didn't seem like much of a reason for a brother to sneak in for. She's so small....she looked like a high schooler dancing. Twitch was hot, of course, he's so smooth & suave. The judges weren't feeling it either- she'll be dancing for her life.
8- Lauren + Ade'
choreo-Mandy Moore, style-pop-jazz
The young blonde girl & ole' Ade danced to "Oh yeah," the 80s classic. Lauren was supposed to be sexyish since they were dancing on a couch. The dance was athletic, there was a great split lift - no problem for big & strong Ade'. I think she is maybe too young to pull off a womanly character, but she definitely tried. Mia said she had 'unused space' on stage. I dunno, I liked it pretty much.
9-Kent + Anya
choreo-Tony Meredith, style-cha cha, "Lady Marmalade"
Poor Farm Boy, had to try & lead ole Thunder Thighs in this Latin ballroom number. He had the funny ballroom expressions part down - mucho queso!
Anya just looked huge next to Kent - he looked so young (but adorable).
The judges got a laugh out of his fresh-off-the-farm attempt at cha cha.
10- Ashley + Neal
choreo-Tyce Diorio, style-contemp
Neal & brunette girl were dressed in contemp flowing white. Dance was about being in love & losing it. Neal was wonderful, I could feel his emotions. Ashley did a great leap into his arms. Ashley is a very good lil dancer, but another one that's probably too young to bring any depth of emotion to her character. Nigel assumed she had never been in love - the judge weren't connection with her emotions, sheesh, she's only 19. [But I remember when I was 19, Holy Lolita!]
11- Robert + Courtney
choreo-Sean uh, somebody, style-Afro-jazz, Music from Cirque du Soleil.
I liked this dance! I loved how handsome Robert danced it, he was the surprise player of the night. His afro-movements were free & loose & to the fast beat & joyful. He & cutie Courtney looked good together.
My favorite dance of the night.
